Question, if i have an 18' length of wall and 3 3-4" windows how would i set the spacing between the windows to be equal.  this would be a masonry wall and the result is 2' between. i can do this in my head just fine and move it to the correct spacing,  i cant seem to get revit to adjust the spacing on its own.  i think it is because the dims of the windows are fixed(ie 3'-4" per the family) and it will not equallize them by clicking the eq symbol on the dim string.

That is what i have done, but it equalizes the windows themselves rather than the spacing between

bUT ... THE SPACES BETWEEN are EQUAL.  iF YOU WANT THE eq HERE - IT IS BETTER TO REPLACE WITH TEXT IN THOSE TWO LOCATIONS.

SORRY WORKING - THEREFORE CAPS.

You can get it to do the math for you but you have to use two different dimension strings to do it. However, I think it only works when you have 3 openings.

Hub, the widow spaces are equal but the wall spaces between the windows are not.

John, You got what I was trying to do.

I think it will be easier to just do my own math and place them were they need to go.  There is alot of "leg work" to get Revit to do it, espaecialy if I have a longer wall and more windows. I have been using Revit for a longtime and have not had alot of complaints,  but it would be nice if it could equalize the remaining wall space.

Ptrdckrsn....NO MATH REQUIRED - Just learn to use the tools.

If your window families are built correctly, dimensions to the center of the windows set equal will give you equal dimensions between the windows.  NOT EQ dimensions but equal dimensions!

You need to learn to use multiple tools.  If you want a fixed 2' dimension between windows.  Dimension just between two of them - set to 2' and lock.  Now dimension to the centers and set eq.  The will all be 2' between the windows.

Understand?

Hub,

Sorry if I mislead you in my post as to what I was looking for an answer to.

But that’s no reason to be snippy, I am constantly trying to further my knowledge and find new and different ways of working in Revit and passing it on to co-workers. I am tasked at my office as the Revit Coordinator, training and answering questions is my responsibility, i.e. helping.  Your comment as to learn to use the tools was offensive and presumptuous, I am no beginner to Revit and have been using it since v3.5 actually still have the install disc. I have however noticed you tend to be this way in other posts and this concerns me, you are after all a site moderator and here to help, if helping is an issue maybe you should reconsider your position.  So please exercise some restraint and be a little more understanding. Not everyone is on your level and your harshness can turn people away. I have co-workers that do not like to post questions for fear of getting a snippy comment from you.

I have been using Revit City since its inception. Although my member date does not reflect this, I lost my login when I changed jobs. Maybe my low post ratio prompted you to draw mislead conclusions about the question asked.

This is by far the best grassroots website out there for Revit Questions help and issues.  I tell everyone that I know this and encourage them to log in and start an account. I will continue to use Revit City and promote this site.

Sincerely,

P. Dickerson

I don't think I was at all snippy.  When you said "I think it will be easier to just do my own math and place them were they need to go." that indicates you don't understand a very easy process in Revit.

I'm old and I don't take offense when someone tells me I'm doing something wrong.  I learned a long time ago in architecture school to take valid criticism and use it.  That has served me well for 65 + years.

I have been using Revit for a long time, but I like every one else on this site am still learning.  You can't insult me by telling me I don't know something because when you show me where I'm wrong, I too will now now it.

Hub,

Sorry that I misread your intentions, I am not above learning new things. but back to the issue. have you tried what you mentioned? when i do it still pulls the windows to center with in the wall, not giving me equal spaces between my windows, but rather equal window spacing. if i have 10 windows in a the length of wall i would have to lock them all at a certain dimension to get an equal dimension bewteen my windows. at that point isnt it easier to just place them on my own? i guess i am not following your idea all to well. the issue is dimensioning to a masonry opening. centering windows in a wood or steel framed wall is no problem to get equal distances. becausse you would dimension to a center line at that point.

if you look at johns image his bottom dim is what i need my final result to be.  seems like i can not get it without doing at least 3 dim strings, and that is if i just have 3 windows any more and it gets more complicated.

PD

Process:

  1. If you want a specific dimension between widows.  Dimension two windows edge to edge only and lock it.
  2. If you want all windows in a facade to be equal distance apart.  Dimension center to center of windows- set EQ then lock all.
  3. If you want the windows centered on a facade:
  • If there is an odd number. simple pick your center window and move it form it's center to the center of the wall.  Everything will move with it.
  • If you have an even number, place a temp line perpind to the wall somewhere between your windows and dimensio it from firts and lat and set eq.  Now you may have to place a line in the center of your wall if you don't know where that is because its covered by a window?  Pick any window and select move - start poit is your firet line - end point is your wall middle line.

DONE

totally get all that, i was wanting it to combine steps.  i.e. i have the 3 windows that take up 10ft, i was wanting revit to equalize the remaining 8ft. which is the 2ft between each window. but there are a few steps to get it to do that, i was just trying to minimalize the steps.

Thanks for your help with the issue.
