I have some masses imported from sketchup with many faces on them. I first create a new mass then import the sketchup file so revit treats it as a mass. I can sit here for hours painting every surface but thats stupid. can I paint an entire mass one color? I tried changing the rendering color of "defult" and "generic" in materials but the masses remain grey...

CAD file materials are controlled by layer. Look for those layer materials under the manage tab / object styles/ imported objects. Expand the dwg file and you can control the assigned materials there.
