I'm trying to show two different layouts for furniture. Is there any way to duplicate a plan in such a way that it is independent? (To the point that if you move the furniture in the new, it does not change the old?)
I'm working with Revit 2011

Use design options. Place copies of the furniture in both worksets and remove from the main model. Then in one view, show the main model with Option A furnishings and in another view, show the main model with Option B. You control which option shows in the views VG settings once you set up your options.
Read about how to do this in your HELP.
