Hi,

I'm about to set up a project where one team will model the internal walls for all levels and another team will model the external envelope and cores.

I envisage that both teams will link in the other teams model to create the whole building.

I'm wondering if there is any advice on working in this way anyone can offer.

I've noticed that Revit wont find the walls as area boundaries when the walls are drawn in one of the other linked models. (Guess I'll have to put some room separation lines where the linked model walls are).

Anything else?

Thanks.

Ok, I've found that you can set links to room bound - so thats that sorted.

Any other tips would be good.

Why are you doing them as seperate projects?  Wouldn't it be easier just to use worksets?

The internal model (i.e. internal walls) will be done by specialist planners in another office, where as we will be doing the shell.

We are not using Revit server unfortunatly....

I was wondering what the general concencus is on managing projects in this way.

I have worked on both large (£300m) projects and small (£2m) projects.

within the large projects we split external walls, internal walls (also split into seperate internal wall department files)

I've worked on up to £14m projects that all internal walls and external walls have been within one revit project file.

Recently we have started a small Refurb job (£2m) and the proposed is being drawn within a seperate file to the existing. The existing will then be linked in. This will mean when we want to demolish walls we will need to jump into the existing file.

Would really appreciate peoples thoughts on managing projects in this way. Do you think it is better to sperate internal walls to external, within seperate revit files? Or do you think it is better (probably mainly on smaller jobs) that all is drawn within one revit file?

All opinions are welcome

Cheers

I could possibly see linking in an existing building ... but that has consequences as you have found out.

I see no reason to split the file between interior / exterior walls.  We do use a seperate workset called shell fo all exterior model elements.  That workset is turned on for exterior elevations with the interior worksets off - making it easier on Revit.  If this file is linked into a lrager site file, we also turn off all worksets except the shell.

Do you think those consequences are worth it?

It is worth it if the file already exists and if you only have a few items to change but then I would probably do it a little different.  I would have a copy of the walls to be demo'd or modified in my project file and do the demo and changes there.  Those walls in the existing file would be in a "to be changed" workset and that would be off when linked.

Jumping back and forth is not easy.

So Just to clarify..

you would creat a copy of the existing project revit file (that we surveyed and drew). Keep the initial file for existing state drawings (plans elevations) and make all changes and demolitions within the duplicated file?

No.

There are a couple of possibilities here.

1.      Use the existing model as your base (saving a copy elsewhere)

         - Select all model elements and place on an existing workset and in existing phase.

         - Do your project in other worksets.

2.      Link in the existing model in a seperate workset -

         - Copy all elements to be modified into the new file and set them to existing

                    - set these elements in the existing file to a new workset in that file called to be modified.

         - Do your project
