My firm is now using Revit 2012. Is there a way is link components? Meaning that once I pull several components(detail and model) out the library and place them in a template, if I decide to modify one of them it will also modify the same one in the library.

Once the item is in the template, it is stand-alone.  It does remember where it came from but that is all.  Therefore, you have to update both your library and any elements in any files you have, including templates.

This does create some maintenance issues.  When you update year to year and if you just update your template, its components are updated but still pathed to your old library location.  (We maintain a new library for each version.)  So if you open a family for editing from a template that was updated from 2011, and save it, it will go back to your 2011 library even though it is now a 2012 family.  You have to do a save as into your new library location.
