Can someone please give me a detailed description of how to edit a wall so that you can have two finishes eg brickwork upto 1 meter then paint finish to the roof.

if you have a brick wall to a meter high and than different material on top, the best way to deal with this is to create a stacked wall, see tutorials for that...
if it's the same material but you want to, say render, a meter above to the ceiling, go to elevation of that wall, use the split tool to split your wall where ever you want, you can adjust the height so don't worry too much where you split, that use the paint bucket tool and apply the material you want...
