Hi all,

I've been handed some drawings and photographs of an old mill building, my client has requested that it be modelled as accurately as possible and that the walls accuracy is high priority, when I look at the drawings the external face of the walls seem fairly verticle but the internal face seems very inconsinstant as it is much thicker in places than in others and also leans slightly (40-50mm off vertical bottom to top).

I can create a mass object that matches the shape of the walls by drawing the profile at each level and lofting through them. is there a way to turn this into a wall?

Or alternatively is there a way of editing the profile of the wall in plan (similar to how you can in elevation)?

Much appreciated for any advice Winking

"I can create a mass object that matches the shape of the walls by drawing the profile at each level and lofting through them. is there a way to turn this into a wall?" - No, a mass is a mass, you can't convert mass into another category.

Why don't you create that with "In-Place2 in the Wall category?

with "in place" my only options for modelling are to create blends that fall on parallel planes and can only create a top and bottom profile, whereas the wall is a little more irregular, which massing allows me to work with. I guess i'll have to fudge it as best I can Crying

It's a bit annoying really as the whole building is completely skewed in one way or another, even the window lintols are collapsing and they need to be shown as is, this job would have been better suited to Z-brush or 3D Max, but my client has already promised his client a 3D Revit model lol, pretty much everything in it will likely be in place models so will only really be useful as a visual aid one which could have been done much quicker and more accurately in other programs.

Ah well clients and their promises I guess lol - I'll just battle on Winking

Don't suppose there is a way of attaching in place modelled walls to roofs is there, I've modelled the roofs by placing points on an original flat roof (seems to be working a treat at creating irregular collapsing roofs lol) this way it is semi usable. problem I now have is that the model in place walls won't attach to the roof, i can create voids to cut the wall at the tops but these leaves gaps between the wall and roof. So does anyone know a bette way to attach an inplace modelled wall to roofs/floors?

3D Scan it.  Existing is where this process really shines.

the 2D drawings were created from a 3D scan (pointcloud) the company make trueviews from them where they attach a colour scan, it's great to look at but has no other use past that, there is the possibility of taking the pointcloud with colour into geomagic to create a mesh but it never looks that tidy and requires alot of work removing noise and filling in holes properly.

I assume the client wants to use my model to stick a new proposal on the side of the existing, it's a conservation area and i think the building is listed so i assume the Local Authorities are being picky.

I've done a model in place of the walls now and they actually work reasonably well, I never knew you could place windows and doors into an in place family Winking big tick for Revit there Winking
