Is it just me or do you really have to do Alt + 0186 for the degree symbol or is there a proper way....
Even AutoCAD had symbols built in.

Revit uses TrueType Fonts that are available to all programs. AutoCAD uses SHX files which were only written for AutoCAD. Whether or not the degree symbol is available in your font style is dependent on the font.
Goto your windows start and select run ... type in CHARMAP ... this program will show all the special keys available for whichever TTF you are using and you can select the item(s) - copy it to your clipboard and ctr'l V paste it into your revit text.
