We had a problem here and lost the server temporarily while I was working in my local file. Although the server was restored before I exited my local file, Revit would not let me save to central. I got the message that I cannot access users.dat. I have also tried saving my local file as a new central file and get the same message. Now I cannot save to central or relinquish the worksets I had checked out. The central file will open, but shows that I have worksets checked out and also will not let me save to central. I have tried making a new local file by doing a "Save As" from the central, and I get a fatal error when I try to save to central and relinquish from this new local file. I have tried copying the central file to my machine, and opening it. It will open OK, but shows that I have worksets checked out. When I try to save to central, fatal error. Any thoughts? Create a new central file from your local file as you originally attempted. Give it a different name first or rename the actual central file so you are not overwriting the current central file. This should avoid any access errors. Let me know if this doesn't work.

Tried that. It tells me it cannot save the data - no other explanation.

go to open the central file and tick :"detach from central" and "audit" you should have a clean and separate file now, save as and make it central... tell us how you went. HTH

Bizarre sounds like you have some access/security issues on your network or some problems with disk space??? Never experienced or heard of any of the issues your having.

eldados, "detach from central" and "audit" sound like exactly what I need. Where are these commands located? I have searched the help file and the word "audit" doesn't even appear. Just found them - only available in 8.1. Upgraded and used them - worked like a charm. Still don't know what caused the error, but at least it's fixed now. Thank you!
