hello again. i'm still having problems figuring out what the process is for changing the appearance of valves in MEP 2012. i need to be able to change the detail component that revit uses to show a valve in a single line view. here is a sample of what i'm talking about. on the left is the out of the box butterfly valve. and i need to get it to look like the symbol on the right. i know that it can be done, so that i can match our company standards. i just don't know how to do it. and can't find any tutorials to help.

I have not worked with Revit MEP, but if I want to modify a symbol in Revit Arch, I'll copy and save the similar family type and modify it accdgly. If there's a 3D component to your symbol, that is a little bit complicated because you have to model the parts. Try with 2D first and load it to your file. If it works then you're on the right track.
