What determinants, can be gleamed from the fragmentary nature of a broken proj. to file size that would act as the ultimate litmus of the need to break a model into smaller pieces.
I suggest:
file size, machine specs, end users disenchantment with the load times, # of rev techs, deadlines, techy experience, fragmentary design degradation, opening and closing the plethora of files thus created hence driving techies mad, control over packages.

my personal experience i have worked on everything from 50,000 sq ft all discipline models up to a 14 million sq ft building. The only time i break up models is if there are multiple buildings. for larger buildings I use worksets to manage the file and usually only use rvt links for consultant disciplines. my worksets i use uniformat building codes to define the workset and usually add user named worksets, linked cad, linked rvt and levels and grids. if you would like to see other people managing large project i suggest joining the AU site and search for Lonnie Cumptons "Managing Large Projects in Revit Architecture"
the main caveat is hardware limitations.

Thanx grey,
There are approx 40 users on the proj. so "for crying out loud!" what is up? Techmeisters have 6 core sandybridge(?) xeons with 36 gig of ram and a few double cpu xeons aswell, we have the hardware technology to forge great things from a single model and in homage to the late I-thingies wizard do it in a more user friendly way and focus less on settings and configurations and spend more time making smiley faces with Architects on our GUIs.
I will check out Loonie cumptons site and hopefully be mesmerized by her wisdom.
May you survive many CPU cycles!
