I am using a student version of Revit 2012.

I am a pretty quick learner and this is only my second time using it for a studio project.

This is the first time I have run into this problem, and it only seems to do it when I set the rendering settings different than the preset settings.  Example, setting custom to duplicate "best" then adjusting Antialiasing from 8 to 10 (smoother details) and soft shadows from 6 to 8 (smoother gradiation). In every preset I can get complete renderings, however once I use the custom setting it still takes forever and the render box works its way to 100% but I am left with a render image like the attached image. (which took a little over 9hrs to complete)

The scene is setup pretty well as far as I know, and I have section boxed everything outside of the view parameter so rendering will be faster.  Outside of windows is just an image, the building is currently just floating in space. lol  Not all of the lights are turned on, but it is set to sun + artificial lighting.  I was thinking maybe it was too complicated, but Ive seen renderings on here that looked far more detailed.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I also have a question about rendering 3d sections, I have figured out how to get a 3d sectioned view and render it fine, but am curious is there any way to have wall details stripped back by each layer?  I have seen some very cool 3d sectioned buildings, but people I ask tell me it must have been done in a different program, or drawn specifically for that purpose.

With more searching Ive found some people have had similar issues due to running into hardware restrictions, but I think this is not the case here.

My system specs:

AMD 1090t 6core CPU @ 3.8ghz (overclocked but 100% stable, issue above happens at stock settings too)

MSI 890fxa-gd70 motherboard

16gb 1333 ddr3 ram

750gbHDD

ATI 4870x2 GPU

The file is 8.4mb in size, and never uses over 3.3gb of ram (leaving almost 13gb free still).

I dont get any warnings in the render progress box either, which I would think Revit would use is something is causing the render to end prematurely, wouldnt others agree?  Ive also tried turning off all of the lights & just rendering with daylighting, still no luck. I am currently trying older backups of the file which seem to be rendering okay, but they have nowhere near the details in the rendered view that I want.

I am also currently trying to find out if I can export the model 100% as is into 3ds for rendering without changing anything, because Ive never used 3ds, but have it available at school.

open your task manager while rendering and see if process "fbxooprender2.exe" hangs.

first i would turn off your furniture and render the scene. if it renders through you know what area to focus on next

I will try that, thanks for the advice.  Would I need to check task manager while it is hung up? Or could that be found after the rendering claims to have been finished? I assume it needs to be watched durring, but I really dont want to sit & watch the processes for 9hours or so. lol

I copied the file & then deleted EVERYTHING that was outside of the view I wanted to render, which should not have been a big deal since most things had been turned off or cropped out of the view, but it seems to be working now. I got it to render completely set to "best" with sunlight only, artificial only, thinking that would tell me if the lighting was the issue. I am rendering at sun+artificial now so fingers crossed.

Better late than never, but I believe I have finally solved this issue!

I found the issue to be related to the overclocked BIOS settings on the computer, and over the summer found that if I set the BIOS to stock Revit would render completely fine at max settings, but anytime the clock speed had been altered the rendering would no longer finish correctly, and Id be left with partially rendered images that seemed to bug out at completely random intervals.

The computer was completely stable aside from this weird Revit bug, I could run Prime95 (a great stress/stability testing program) at full torture for over 48hrs without a single calculation error on any of the 6 cores, but for some reason Revit wouldnt last more than an hour or so on a "best" rendering. My computer never BSOD'd and I had never had a single issue with the overclock. A short while ago I started playing with the voltages in the BIOS again & found that with the CPU voltages raised Revit would last longer before failing to finish the rendering. So I kept upping the voltage, re-rendering, up the voltage, re-render, and finally after adding a pretty significant amount of power to the CPU it began to render error free at the OC'd settings. I am well within the saftey level of the CPU, but quite a bit higher than I had needed for a stable computer.  I have now completed several 30+ hour renderings on max settings and all have completed to 100% without any errors.

I can finally take advantage of the overclock where I had wanted it the most.
