I am currently in the process of setting up an office template for our projects. i want to keep most of the Revit graphics the same for presentation purposes, but would like to develop a way to output our drawings easily either in Revit or exporting to CAD. The problem occurs when i would like to use our graphics and our CAD standards i.e. line wieghts and colors.

i was wondering if anyone has experience setting up a Template or where to look on advice. Maybe a step by step process

here's a few pointers to get you started. . .

Start with the installed Metric or Imperial Templates that install and then saveas. . . . .

Setup Project Units

Setup the text and dimension types

Insert all symbol families

Setup Elelemnt Tags and Section Tags, Callout Tags, Elevation Tags and Arrow Heads

Insert most potential to be used model families

* Setup object Styles (critical)

Setup Line Styles

Setup Fill Patterns

Setup Materials

Setup Schedule Types

Setup Legends

If you plan to use Keynotes then you need to setup the Keynotes File and tie into it.

Insert Title Block Families

Shared Parameter file

Maybe setup some levels and name them etc. . .

If you knew ahead of time you even setup the views and pu5t them on sheets.

. . . . .anyone else please feel free. . . .

I like using legends for all my system families so people can see documented versions of all our standard walls/ceilings/floors without having the model area cluttered with geometry.

for example I have:

WallTypes-100 (this has our gyp and furred wall types) This legend can also be modified and placed on a sheet

WallTypes-200

WallTypes-300

and so on. I am looking forward to more functions with tagging elements within legends to streamline this process.

If you look under export, then DWG/DXF export setup, there is a whole dialogue for exporting to CAD settings with layers, colors, linetypes, patterns, etc.  You can even automatically set the fill patterns to export as CAD hatches!!!!!

I would not suggest setting up your revit to match your autocad standards.

I was tasked with that when I first started with revit, and it was terrible.  using a mix of cad and revit in your office is going to be a headache, too.   Often, a project will get 45% of the way done in revit, and then people will start to complain about  the ugliness of the plans and sections, and demand that they be exported to cad.

The short answer is that YES, ____[insert grievance]___ *can* be done in revit.  In object styles, default line weights for everything can be set.  So, all roofs when cut are nice and dark, as well as structural foundations.  All furniture could be a light dashed gray if you wished.  It takes some back and forth to tweak the default line weights for categories of objects to get things printing like your cad standards were.

Line WEIGHTS are soooo sensible in revit.  Basically, what you see is what you get.  There aren't arbitrary thicknesses assigned to colors.  We have 1 through 8 line thicknesses.  From Very Thin to Extra Wide.

i think I'm off the topic now, though.
