Why did this do this, and how do I make them look alike:Click image for larger version

Oh also - how do I get the two W8x10 lines to show as heavy a lineweight as the other beams?  And stop short of the other beams they are framing into?

IIRC, you need a beam system if you want a span tag instead of individual tags. Other things you can try is creating a new symbol, or use a dimension and override the text to say what you want.

 

For the graphics, check Object Styles and the Structural Usage for the beams.

You know it seems to do it when I use skecth to put in the beam system - how do I change this?

When you 'Sketch' the beam system it puts in individual tags. Delete them. Then click on one of the string tags that you like, click the 'create similar' button, click to select the 'sketched beam system' and click to place the good tag.
