I want to show a new door within my design option but because it's in an existing portion of the building I am unable to add it. Is htere a way around this? I do not want to change my main model as it is of course concpetual.

All design option elements that are hosted, like doors, must have their host residing in the same design option.
To fix your problem, add your existing walls to both options - Opt 1 ( default) and Opt 2 then place the door in option 2.
