Not sure if I'm missing something, but is there any way to influence the phase settings of a split face? I've been getting round this so far by destroying the walls in question at the new construction phase, then rebuilding new walls in their place with the split face in it. Seems a long-winded approach. Is this possible? Thanks

Not sure what you mean by split face...

If I understand correctly, you want to demo only part of a wall face. i.e. Tear off brick veneer above a specific hieght. If this is the case there are two things to keep in mind. 1. Revit does not handle various thicknesses vertically in a wall type. 2. The split face tool only 'paints' the area, it doesn't actually change the wall construction so you could make a wall that looks to be brick and block but in the section view it would show as gyp board and mtl studs. The best why I have found to get around these issues is to stack walls on top of each other so you can demo only part of a wall or change the thickness. Strange enough though you can split a wall in plan and demo only part of it. I'm not sure if this approach will save you any time modeling but it will allow you to schedule and track materials accurately further on in the project.

Thanks. That was part part of the problem, but an even simplier scenario I've come across is just adding an extention to an existing property. If my extension covers, say, the lower right quadrant of an exterior wall, in an existing view I'd want to show the whole wall with a stone finish. In the new construction, however, with the extension on, I'd want to show that same wall as stone with the lower right quadrant with an interior finish. So, essentially all I want to do IS just paint a section of the wall, yet I am unable to phase this without resorting to constructing the wall in two discreet sections.

In a word... Correct. Revit leaves a bit to be desired for more complex phasing processes. For instance there is also no support for 'remove and reuse' (would be incredibily useful) Ultimately the phasing tool needs to be opened up a bit and allow for 'partial demo' of hieght, thickness, finishes, etc. while allowing the remaining to be marked as 'recondition' for things like repointing brick or patching damaged plaster. So hang in there and I'm sure the guys at Revit will take care of us in an up coming release.

Fingers crossed. Thanks again.

just incase anyone is browsing this thread for ideas: you can deal with the exterior wall being made interior and plastered by literally adding a wall that is just a plaster thickness in the proposed phase. It is a very literal representation of what you actually do in real life.
