Any one have thoughts about this work process. I'm looking for the best software to model metal panels for shop drawings. In theory the panels are created so that the elevations are easily manipulated. Each panel is a custom size and then for fabrication, the panel is unfolded so that a 2D CNC cutting process can occur. The sheet metal is cut, then bent up on four sides. I've been asked to explore this in revit, but I'm thinking Rhino is the way to go. Any comments/insight?

Any reason why you would choose solidworks over inventor, pro e or rhino?

Thanks.

Revit cannot do this. I prefer Autodesk products so I'd recommend Inventor. Their sheet metal tool is really easy to use and is designed for export to CNC equipment.

Whilst we've done this in Revit and have developed an API to automate the process.  For OOTB inventor would be a better solution.

Just note to work in inventor with the sheet metal tools, all the geometry needs to be modelled natively in Inventor.  Its pretty useless at working with imported geometry from tools like 3DS Max, AutoCAD etc.

Hi Mr Spot,

We are a stair designer/fabricator www.slik.ca. And we work with revit 2013, we are very interested in the API you've develop to automate the unfolding. Since you are a authorized autodesk developer, is the plug in gonna be available soon?
