ProblemWe are working for a contractor that would like the external walls in our model to be seperate elements; for example the external wall to be divided into two skins; external and internal.  The external skin would extends from the foundations to the roof, but the internal skins would be seperate elements that extend from floor slab to floor slab. This way of working enables there BIM platform to extract the building quantities for each floor.

Join geometry is unsatisfactoryThe quickest way to do this seemed to be to use Join Geometry although this enables you to put a void through the walls at the same time, the architrave sticks to only one of the walls along with the jamb  etc.

Although we have 2012 we haven't really used it. After a quick play I thought the Create Parts command would enable me to do split the wall down into it's parts and then to divide those parts per floor, it didn't seem to work how I expected it to - I have a feeling I may be missing something here.

We have different wall makeups and one of the walls would probably have to be constructed from three different skins.

Any advice would be welcome.

Wellllll, I'm not sure I'd do what the contractor is asking... you can unlock adjacent wall layers to have a "base (and/or top) extension distance" that you can control.  IE, the siding and rigid insulation can be stretched down below the floor which the stud layer is attached to.  makes some pretty crisp detailing at the model level.

pics related.

Edit:  Looks like I didn't understand your question fully the first time around, sorry.

I don't think you want to do this in Revit.  I seem to rember you can do this with Navisworks.  Remember, after exporting to CAD, walls are now built of seperate components.  Someting I googled.

Develop a 4D Model in Navisworks with Timeliner:

You could split the revit walls ahead of time by level.

Thanks for your thoughts. I didn't think that it was possible/practical to do this in Revit, but I wanted to make sure. I will suggest they try the NavisWorks timeline procedure you suggested.

If I do find a solution, I will share it.

A little late, but I found splitting a wall in a section view, the wall splits horizontally, so you can do that to separate them by floors after being modeled as one continuous wall. The problem is that all resulting walls keep referenced to the original level.
