What mistake?  How does Revit know where you think it should measure a wall?  It could be inside dimension - outside dimension, what?  Revit always measures centerline of joining wall to centerline of joining wall.

any advise on workarounds or best practises for scheduling correct wall volumes and areas?

Revit's cleanup at wall joins is based on the function you assign in the wall type layer.  That really affects material areas.

Remember, Revit is NOT an estimating program but it can still give you some useful information.  You just have to understand all the rules.  (I still don't)  I suggest you create a very simple project with two walls and do some reporting where you can monitor what happens when.  I would vary the function numbers and see how that affects the takeoffs.  You may find that material reporting may be more useful in some instances rather than wall.
