What are the pros and cons of using stacked walls? I confess I have never used them but when is it appropriate? We are talking simple 2 storey houses here.

Stacked walls are good tools and you should have no problems using them in your limited projects.

Stacked walls are really simple walls that are stacked - in esscence grouped (not Revit GROUP) together.  As such, they can be "un-stacked" if needed and they return to simple walls but still in place.

Problems that can occur with stacked walls are when corner joins are not in the same location vertically.  Like when one level steps back fro the level below.  Another problem at corner joins occurs if the stacked wall has a profile sketch.  In these cases, the walls should be broken up so that each wall type works independently.

Remember, each individual portion of the stack is controlled by its wall type definition and will tag independent of the stack.  The stack itself is not taggable as a type.

I'm having trouble getting an area take off of walls in a stacked wall

they dont appear in the material take off or the schedule

Do I have to break up the stacked wall in order to get the areas of the walls?

Did you read my earlier post?  Stacked walls ARE STACKED WALLS!  Not one item but two or more walls.  The areas will be of each individual wall in the stack.

I read other posts and realized that the "itimize each instance" must be checked to see the areas. not intuitive but as long as I get the numbers I'm OK

Thanks for the responces.
