First I installed R2012. Then I also installed R2011 but later on removed it. Now that I am left again only with R2012 I get the issue that when I open a file and then another one afterwards the latter opens in its own single instance of Revit, thus having 2 instances of the software running at the same time.

How do I work my way around this?

If you double click on a file, it will always open an instance of Revit.  Open the file from within Revit instead.

Ermmm, not really. Normally once Revit is started up, all other Revit files you open get opened in the very same Revit.exe instance. That goes both for families and projects. Same problem occurs with AutoCAD sometimes. Normally all consecutive files that are open appear, again, in the very same first instance of acad.exe. Once something goes wrong though all consecutive AutoCAD files, that one opens up, create a separate acad.exe instance, which is obviously wrong...

I have the same problem with ACAD. I'm not sure how to fix it, but a workaround (if you want to call it that) is to drag and drop the files into the current session instead of double-clicking. DO NOT drag and drop a family into a drawing window, that loads the family into the project. Minimize or restore down the drawing window so you can drag and drop into a blank space in the Revit window.

Just found this post by Mr. Spot in a different forum:

XP: - Launch Windows Explorer and go to Tools -> Folder Options (or Control Panel -> Appearances and Themes -> Folder Options) - Click the File Types tab - Browse to and select the Revit files types (RFA, RVT, RTE, RFT) - For each file type, click on the Advanced button - For each Action, click the Edit button - In the Action field, ensure that the name of the action is specified ○ For example, for the open action, ensure that "open" is specified in the Action field

@TKennedy:

Sounds fair enough but in XP. How about in Windows 7? Can't really find out how to do that in Win7... atm I am uninstalling Revit as well as cleaning up all traces from it, all registries, everything and later on going to reinstall it, hopefully to find out that it is working properly. I already did 1 uninstallation and afterward reinstallation but it did not work out i.e. multiple instances kept occurring sadly. Now, as I said, trying to erase all Revit traces from my system and hopefully that'd bring me the answer...

I don't recall exactly where they hid the options in Win7, but they are there. Do some googling for file types and programs. From what I can tell it's not a Revit/ACAD problem at all, it's a Windows problem.

I agree, but sadly, right now, after cleaning up my whole system from Revit traces, when I try to perform a clean installation, I am told that Revit 2012 is already installed and that's a big bummer..... What to do now...?

DOES NOT WORK as for many others as well...

Tried pretty much everything already, including Windows Install Clean Up Utility and still nothing...

Any other ideas would be muchly appreciated before I actually go for reinstalling OS...
