What program do you need to create families(parts for building, if thats what families mean)? I am new to all this.

revit has a program built in for creating families- (doors windows etc. etc.)- that can be saved outside of a revit project and brought into any project.. file> new> family- pick template for starting family then you are taken to the "family editor" to create that family..

Making families are fun and very useful. You can download some families from this site, and see what they can do; especially for those parametric ones. You can go to "Download", "08-Openings", "08 10 00-Doors & Frames", try to get "Adjustable Hollow Metal Doors - Improved Version", following the direction posted, then you can see what a parametric family can do. Welcome to Revit world.

If you want to build families, you should start by downloading the Families Guide from the autodesk site.
