Hi, as my topic subject suggests i need to insert survey data that is a long way from the origin, I'm currently working at a surveying company and we are producing an existing revit model that needs to be located exactly on grid. I have the initial data in the form of dwg which i need to link upto as it shares the same location as the point cloud we have.

When i try to insert the dwg and pointcloud Revit tells me that it is far from the origin so it changes my import option to a centre instead of origin. This will infact make my model very wrong as it needs to be on grid, as this is how it will be issued to our client.

I've seen answers to similar threads, basically saying move everything closer to the origin and it will be fine: I'm afraid in this scenario it won't be fine, i need to kick revit up the digital arsee and somehow make it let me insert stuff far from the origin. please can someone tell me how this can be done, preferably step by step???

Thanks in advance all Winking

Your Revit model can be exactly on grid..... You just can not use a DWG that is too large.  The origin we are talking about is not a survey location but the DWG origin.  Change the DWG origin to a more manageble location.

Hi thanks for the quick reply, I've set the site location using both the survey and the project base points, i've set it based on the dwg information (ie found the coordinates of a set point on the dwg, moved the whole model in revit to that relevant point in ACAD, then made sure that the cordinates in Acad of that point match the N/S and E/W of the points in Revit. however the problem now lies with the point cloud. it still brings it in in the wrong position, even though it comes in exactly on the AutoCad drawing. the pointcloud is in .pcg format

Also is there a way to tell revit to recognise that the project base point now has a coordinate, instead of it still trying to read it as 0,0 when inserting things??? It would be a great world if everyone worked with and understood revit, sadly they do not, so is there a way that you can get revit/AutoCAD to read the same origin without having to move things in Autocad off the baseppoint?? hopefully there is otherwise things could get pretty tricky when the structural engineers and mechanical engineers get involved with their drawings and all they are using is AutoCAD as they have no knowledge of Revit.

Read these topics in your HELP as a starting point:

Acquiring and Publishing Coordinates

Acquire Coordinates

Publish Coordinates

Project Base Points and Survey Points

Also, download AUGI Edge - Winter 2010 - There is a good article titled "Revit's Shared Coordinates - A tutorial"
