I would like to put a light or two inside my model to liven it up  a little before rendering. From what I can make out from the Revit "help" section it seems that I have to create a mass element of some description to put the light in?? is that the case.

I thought you wanted to create a light, why are you talking about a mass?

Download and use the families guide from the autodesk website.

just create a new family using the light fixture template. You don't necessarily need any kind of solid but its easier to place and visualize if you do. Don't get into massing, thats the wrong direction. Just play with the 'light source definition' and light parameters to get the output you want
