Hi Guys,

I am trying to create a new ceiling fire alarm family, I am having trouble getting the fixture to attach the the right face though. I have attempted modifying an existing family within the software but when I load it into my project and 'place on face' the element appears to be pointing upwards? Being that it was originally a ceiling fixture I would have hoped that it would attach itself to the ceiling by default and not pick up any other faces in the process? Is there a different way to place fixtures of this kind into the model?

Cheers

A face based family attaches to any face.  A ceiling based family attaches only to ceilings.  In both cases, you have to model the element correctly in relation to their host.

When you modify this "existing family", does it have a host?  If so, that host represents your ceiling and your object should be modeled accordingly - not up/down in relation to your screen.

Thanks for the help WWHub, a little closer investigating revealed that the part I had completed was actually attached to the ceiling, when I changed the level of detail it appeared to be pointing upwards, but a shot in the room using the camera function showed it pointing downwards.

Incedently what template should I be using to create a ceiling family from scratch, I know it sounds silly but my list of available templates in Revit don't appear to have a ceiling template. I utilised a 'Ceiling Mounted' light fixture and just deleted the geometry to create my requirements.

Thanks again though.
