I have emailed a Revit file to myself on my google email address so that I could use it elsewhere on my laptop but I cannot open it on my laptop from there again. All I did was attach it to the email from the location where I save it on my workstation project file location. The file is about 4 or so mb.

Is there some sort of export file or procedure I have to go through to do this.

You don't say if this is a work shared file or not.  If it is, you will have to open it detached.

Is your laptop configured to run Revit?  Did you save the file seperately from your email?

Sorry I do not know what a work shared file is?? I am running Revit 2011 on both machines. I saved the file to a folder on my laptop then tried to open it from the new location!
