Okay, so what's the deal with compacting the central file?  Today, I noticed that our central file had ballooned to 90mb, almost double its normal size.  I compacted a copy of the central, and it went UP, to 130mb.  I compacted again, it went down to 80mb, and then I compacted again, and it went down to 47mb.

HOW can my central file fluctuate between 130 and 47 megabytes in size?  Why does it take 3 doses of the same command to get the desired results?  It isn't filling me with confidence.   I don't particularly care, but I've got to please someone in the office who is extremely sensitive to file size, and 5mb jumps prompt the discussion "should we put furniture in a linked model...?"  and similar draconian measures.  I'm aware I shouldn't have to worry about file size until hundreds of megabytes is reached, and proper workset management can make file size largely a moot point, but... for appearances, I'd like to get a better grasp of what going on.

Not much info on the forums so far about compacting.  Anyone have experiences with it?  Pros, cons?  Is it just razzledazzle or does it improve performance?
