Total newb here, still in evaluation mode. I am trying to create a craftsman style column family. Running up the edges is a 1x4 trim board but i rather would use a model line to cut down on geometry. It seems revit is using "smart constraints" to keep the model lines in the right place I guess, because they are moving correctly when I flex the column, except one of the model lines is not moving corectly. I am not sure what revit is using to constrain the model line to. Any help would be appreciated.

Control lines at angles in Revit families is hard to learn.  I suggest you download the families guide from the autodesk site.  They have something similar in controlling a door swing and that should give you some ideas.  I'm not sure how you built your family, but I doubt you saved much in overhead.  I would do this tapered part of the column as a blend and it would be very easy to control.  For reference planes in plan would control the shape.
