Does anyone know of or have a technique to apply a Visibility/Graphic override for an element in all views?

When we upgraded from 2011 to 2012 some how some elements got changed under VG Detail Level.  It defaulted them back to By View.

What I want to do is put all my Structural Rebar (VG -> Detail Level) to Coarse in every view (not By View).

I used a view template to achive my desired result but there has to be an easier way.  If elements could have an option to set an element override for all views then change as needed per view would be really nice.

I had to manipulate my browser filter to access all the desired views then create a template, uncheck what I don't want to change and only check what I do want to change the select all my views in the browser, apply the template then reset my browser filter.

With the thought in the back of my head, am I sure I didn't change something esle accidently....  (which I am 99% sure I didn't but that thought is still there)  Lucky for me I didn't have any view templates set for any views and was able to apply this one.

Next time I fear I won't be so lucky.  I am not sure if I have a template already applied to a view and if I create a new one and uncheck all that does not apply, will this alter my current view when I apply my new template.  (I will need to investigate)

If someone else has a better technique I would like to hear it

Thanks

We struggle with the same thing.  We like to organize by "hide views on sheets" and that prevents us from selecting a long list of views for applying view templates.  As far as I know there isn't a way to make global changes.  So it's probably going to have to be a little bit of busy work.

But I'm still getting surprised by things I don't know yet.  Maybe someone here has so good time-saving tips out there.

You should be fine. A view template doesn't really get saved with the view, it just applies a set of V/G settings. If you change the view template nothing happens to your views until you apply the template. The only time anything happens automatically is when you create a new view.

With that being said, I have a solution.

Create a filter for your browser called "All Views"   (don't use the "all" option, it will give you + symbol, my way makes all view selectable in one go.)

Set your 'Folder' and 'Filter' to "None"

Now create a view template called "Element Override all Views"

Uncheck everything under include

Now check the desired Parameter field, my example being:  (VG/ Overrides Model) and set Structural Rebar to "Coarse"

When done change your project browser back to your previouse view setting.

If you need to make a second change, your browser already has the filter created "All Views"

Select desired views on your browser and apply template

Make the desired changed to your view template (checking or unchecking as desired)

now go back to your view browser and set back to previouse setting.

This should be a good way to make global changes to VG all views at once.

Does anyone see an holes???

Well, I spoke too soon and without testing my idea first...

My solution flopped.  If i have modified my view in VG and then apply a view template it does change the current settings of my original view.

So if I do a mass change to all views and each view has a different setting it will change them back to default via the view template setting.  I was hoping it would show "variouse" or someting.

Rats

The idea was good but not tested.  Here's egg on my face.  :-)

..... We do this everytime we want to plot a set.  NOTE: No users can be working in a sheet view to do this.

Wow, glad I called it -- I did learn something.

Our other experienced revit-person in the office wanted to restructure our browser organization for the ease of making view template changes/updates... and I deferred in that case not knowing better and we've worked that way for awhile now.  So, it reapplies or reloads specific view templates for all the views on the sheet?  even if there are different view types, like a plan callout next to a section?  If I'm understanding that right, that's very good to know.   I think the word "default" didn't pique my curiosity.  I associate that word with.... gray.

Still, we may need to get more organized to have consistent templates set up in the first place.

I did, but forgot to mention it.

It's still not automatic, it doesn't get applied until you apply it. It will bypass a dialogue box though.
