I know you can copy the old template into the new template directory, and open it in 2012 and save it.

What I am trying to ask is what to do specifically about all the families in the template?  Copying the template means copying the older families.  By older I mean they are from previous releases, not the current release which may have been improved upon.

Also, the older ones are still "linked" to the old location (ie: 2011 template) so if one goes to make a change it would save it into the wrong directory.

So, how does everyone handle this?

Is there any list that Autodesk puts out for new or updated families?

You are correct in your observations. The updated template contains "updated" families that are linked to the previous version's library.

We simply update the template and will only worry about those families that we want to update due to a family change, not just a release change.  (This means our template has families linked clear back to 2008 libraries - but so what?)  Our library is write protected to a select few so we do not have to worry about users saving newer families in an older library.  If a family needs to be modified, we have them send that to one of our "librarians" who will update the family in the template and the library.

I guess that makes sense.  So if I write protect that library file, and someone goes to modify an older family, when they go to save it, it will be write protected, and they can choose the proper directory to save it in, then it updates it that way.
