Any thoughts are appreciated. . . I am using RST 2011

The Revit pile-cap-1 family has the option to have a "Cut-off". This is the parameter that has the pier embed itno the cap from below.  This is working well inside the family (hidden line mode does not show the pier inside the cap in an elevation mode, but does in transparent mode)

However, in the project model, even though the reference is correct, the material is truncated at the bottom of the cap.  Thus, I cannot place a spot elevation in plan views to annotate the top of pier elevation.

Is this a visibiltiy setting in my model?  I have tried making the pier a different material than the cap, still to no avail.

let me see if I understand... you want the cap to be wirefram in plan views only, and opaque in others?

If that's the case, this is my suggestion.

you need to go to the family, edit it... select the cap, and then hit the "visibility settings" button.  In there, tell the cap to NOT show in plan.  You can then draw symbolic lines in the shape of the cap, and tell these to ONLY display in plan.

I know nothing about structure or this pile cap family but that being said, have a look at the properties of the reference plane that defines this in the family.

From the HELP

Is Reference >   Specifies whether a reference plane, sketched during the creation of a family, is a reference in a project. This means that you can dimension to the family or align to it. If you set a reference plane as a reference for all family types, then you can consistently dimension to that family type when you place it in your project.

Thank you for the responses.  I was not very clear.  The family is being built properly and the references appear to be going to the appropriate places.  However, when the pier goes into the cap, the cap material is "cutting" the pier.  I do not want this to happen, I and the pier to "interfrere" and actually go into the cap.

Is that more clear?  If not, I can get some pictures.

In order for one family to cut another, it would have to be hosted by that family and I don't believe this is so.

Obviously you are talking about a section or detail view.... sounds like you need a detail family here.

I have attached a sample file (.rfa) of a pile family.  If you look at the family in elevation, that is where the "cut-off" parameter is.  It works well in the family.

It is in the project I am having issues.  The pier material is truncated at the bottom.  Thanks fo rtaking some time guys.

I added a void extrusion which mirrors the piers, cuts the concrete, and is locked with the cut-off ref plane.

I unlocked your parameters, and added some weak references to the planes too.

take a look, see if it's what you're looking for.  Also, this file shouldn't be 3.5MB.

Edit:  I'm a moron and tried uploading my test project, not the family.  Here it is.

That seems to work great.  Thank you so much for you help everyone.  This is the work around I will use.

Does anyone know why a steel pile will not penetrate the concrete though?  Is it because the cap is the "foundation" and the pile is a nested family. . . almost like the family itself (the "cap") trumps the naested family's material?

Thanks again!
