Hello everyone. I recently graduated from a technical college where I learned to use Revit. The course however was primarily based on walking yourself through a step by step textbook on how to build an office building. So I don't have the confidence using Revit that I have with AutoCAD. Now I am working with a Construction company with plans to implement BIM using Revit Architecture. Needless to say I'm terrified as I'm not sure how to implement what we do into Revit. We specialize in Metal Wall panel design and installation. I'm very unsure how to create models or families of the particular panels we'll need for a job. Any help would be appreciated.

I think the suckey part about your story is you paid to walk yourself thru a book, you could have bought a book off of Amazon for far less and the book would have tought you how to creat families.

Families are one of the basic building blocks of BIM, after all it is the families that hold the information that you BIM from.  This tech school teaching Revit didn't show you how to create families???  Ouch!  I am frustrated for you.

Sorry didn't mean to blast your school.

Ok, off my box:

nu2u, start asking questions this forum has a wealth of knowledge and experiance we are all here to help each other.

That's ok. I actually went to school to get my associate's in Drafting and Design. Revit was just one of the many design software's that I had an opportunity to learn. The foundation of the degree was AutoCAD since it is still the primary software used today. I will follow your advice though and ask specific questions on the board. My instructor himself referred me to this site.

I like the fact you said "opertunity to learn" this gives me a great first impression about your attitude.  I feel you will be fine at your new job.

Yes, the more specific the better, reading between the lines on a forum is a hard thing to do, at least for me anyway.

I wish you luck

Hey there -- You'll want to brush up on Curtain walls/Panels, and family-building.  If your company is really into structural panels, that's pretty much the way to do it.

With an emphasis on making your models on parametric.

I'm looking at your post trying to figure out whether you make prefabricated metal stud walls, or metal wall panels for metal buildings. If the former you may want to look at some add ons. http://www.strucsoftsolutions.com/mwf.asp

Thanks. I've browsed the site a little and it looks like I'm in the right place if I want learn more about Revit. Can anyone recomend a good and "detailed" tutorial on family building in Revit? The help menu info on families didn't seem to give a lot of information, or maybe I was in the wrong place. @mbsteve, my company does the metal wall panels for metal buildings and the like.

Below is a link to Autodesk family guide. It should help a little.

Youtube also has some info on various procedures.
