I've been playing around with Sketchup and see how easy the modeling is compared to Revit. How well does the two programs interface with each other and is it worth getting Sketchup to do the initial design phase of the project...OR will I just end up duplicating unnecessary work. Perhaps I need to by the Sketchup Pro rather than using the free limited version

Revit and sketchup don't communicate particularly well.  You're not going to have revit recognize "walls" drawn in sketchup, for example.  the best you can do is import the .skp file as a mass, and revit can recognize the faces of the mass, and you can apply walls crudely to those faces.

So a lot of work would be duplicated.

I disagree that Revit is significantly slower than sketchup for modeling, though, to go back a step.   It's just a matter of what program you're more proficient with. Sketchup is great for conceptual modeling, but the program gives diminishing returns the more complex your model becomes, and there's a glass ceiling well short of producing construction documents.  Revit might be slower at first, but all work is cumulative, and the payoffs become greater the deeper invested in a BIM model you get.

If you need conceptual design you can use Project Vasari. It's Autodesk software and free. It's fully integrated with Revit.
