This is what I've been taught:

To create a new central file from an old one, physically copy it in the file.  File-Open in Revit.  Detach from Central & Audit.  when the file opens, Save As (the new central file name).  And now you have the new central file.  I usually close out of the file and File-Open again to see if the prompt offers me an option to "save local file" which means to me that the process was completed properly.

This is the issue:

A co-worker presented me this file.  It was created from the out-of-box Revit template (not our standard process).  He is unable to workshare with another co-worker.  I've copied the original file over, opened with revit, but I'm never prompted to "detach from central" (aka, that option is gray).  Once opened, I've saved as a new file and closed the file.  For the check, I re-open the file and there's no option to "save local file".  when opened, there's of course no save to central option either (because it IS the central).

I'm at a loss... never encountered this one... most of the time it's just someone not "saving as" when they're supposed to.  So the file, I guess, is becoming a detached central file upon my physcially copying it?

Any suggestions?  Thanks ya'll!

Two things come to mind.

First, is the file workshared enabled (Are their worksets set up and it is a central/local)?

Second, is the file an RTE or RVT?

Last I checked (many years ago) a RTE could not be workshared. If this is the case, save it as a project file (RVT) and enable worksharing.

Thank you Brett!

It's been so long since I've worked with a fresh file, I forgot there are no worksets set-up!!!!  Can't believe I didn't think of that!  Thanks for being on top of things!
