does anyone know how to create a handrail which attaches to a wall with no balusters?  If anyone could help me with this that would be great.

I assume you want brackets rather than balusters? If so just you'll need a 'bracket' baluster post family and swap that out for the square post in you railing family.

thanks.  But I actually wanted to insert just a handrail to a wall for an enclose staircase, no balusters just the rail.

In that case you can turn off all but the top rails, and turn off the balusters as well.  What he was suggesting was that in place of the balusters you'd have the brackets that actually screw to the wall every... oh, 6 feet or so. 

The railing is still stair-hosted, but the balusters don't actually have to touch them.
