Okay please help and don't direct me to reading the family help file..I have tried and read the forum revit guide etc and must be incredibly dumb not to get this.
I have to finish this project by tonight and need to have the flashing family attached as a parametric detail so I can elongate the family on the roof plan to show in section.
if you could spell it out in kindergarden brilliant. If you plan to tell me to read the Revit family guide don't bother posting.
cheers

You need to create a framework using ref planes. Use dimensions and parameters to make the framework 'flex'. Then create the geometry, locking it to the ref plane framework.
Those are the basic steps to creating a parametric family. I am going to tell you to read the family guide and help, how to do these steps are spelled out pretty well. To go into much more detail without knowing exactly where you are having problems will pretty much mean copying and pasting from the help files.

well, if you want flashing, it's already an option in revit which you can add to a roof. You just need to load in a new profile. Their Fascia tool is better at the job than homebrew families could likely achieve.
If you need this TODAY, i would... (I sound like a broken record, all the threads I've commented in today has been about this) use an in-place sweep where you pick the 3D edge, the 3D edge being your upper corner of your roof.
No need to do this as a separate family. It's just that much harder to control.
You can still control the purple sketch lines after you pick a 3D edge. You can drag them shorter along that path, for example.
pic related. crazy profile for added visibility...

I might be too late to reply, but I agree with itsmyalterego, using sweep will do a better job that a component family (since your family is not parametric and it is not structured to behave it, you are better off doing it as a sweep)
But I would suggest to use it as a wall sweep if it is meant to be for roof parapet situation. (or fascia like other suggested)
either way, it should handle most the situation.
