So everyone knows it can be done, but we don't necessarily use it.  Well, thanks to 2012, its easier than ever!  Here is what you do:  Open up a family in Revit 2012.  Go to the app button, select export->Family.  Your types have just been exported to a comma deliniated text file, which you can manage your types via excel now, AND when you load the family into a project, you get to choose the types you want to bring in...

Now, this works back up until 2010 at least, I'm not bothering to test on anything earlier, but I have verified that you can open a 2010 family in 2012, export it to a text file, and then in 2010, it works as you'd want it to!

Nice! I've always liked type catalogs, but I'll be darned to heck if they aren't a pain to produce quickly.
