I inserted a ceiling based light then copied it 122 times for the other lights on the floor only to find out later that I was inadvertently copying the ceiling as well. I ended up with 122 ceilings.  Everytime I deleted a ceiling it took a light with it.  1) why is it doing that?  and 2) how do I avoid it?  My current project has an angled grid so inserting the light 60 times then rotating it would be prohibitvely slow.  Rotating it once then copying it 60 times would be much more preferable but I don't want 60 ceilings.

You are using the wrong process.  This family requires a host.    If you insist on using copy, then you have to stay in the same ceiling then click on the copy and pick re-host to place in a different ceiling.    A better process is to right-click on your light and pick create similar.

I'm not sure I follow what you're saying.  What do you mean "stay in the same ceiling"?  Thats what I want to do...stay in the same ceiling.  I used the "Create Similar" function and it created another ceiling and not rotated like the original was.  Also contrary to what I said before, i noticed that just inserting the light in the first place creates a new ceiling.  If you select that ceiling it doesn't give you the option to change phases like the original ceiling does.  So essentially everytime I insert a light (OR copy one) it creates a new ceiling.

This sounds like you were not copying the light but the ceiling.  Lights that cut the ceiling have a hole and when you pick in that area, you may be picking the hole (ceiling) - not the light. Check your filter when you copy.

I just copied troffer lights from ceiling to ceiling without problems.  So I misspoke - you do not need to copy then rehost.

But it happens when I first insert the light as well as when I copy.  And I just tried the copy function again and it is definitely selecting the light not the ceiling.

You perhaps are not telling us everything.  Where did you get this light?  Are you sure you are not copying a group?  We need more information in order to help you because this is not a Revit problem.

Well I thought you might be on to something there.  Thought maybe I got the light from a third party, but no.  Its the 2x2 and 2x4 parabolic troffer light that comes standard in Revit.  Not modified at all.  I am definitely just picking 1 light.  The filter shows the light info when I select it.  Nothing about a group.

Well then I'm sorry - I don't think I can help anymore.  The stock 2x4 light in 2011,2010,2009 & 2008 all work.  I've not used 2012 for this yet.

I'm using 2011.  Appreciate the effort. strange that I would be the only one with this issue.  Perhaps the program is somehow corrupted on this machine.  Hoping someone else can shed some light on the subject...no pun intended.
