I have a family that has another family nested.  The nested family is a simple instance tag.  When inserted into a project you can click through the tag to update the parameter while in the drawing.  Just click the "?" and you can edit the tag. (IE. PT-1).  This tag is inested in a generic model line based family.  Once I've inserted this into the family I can no longer simply click the "?" to add the finish information in the drawing of the project.

I've used shared paramater that are loaded into both the family and project.  I can update the the "label" in the properties dialog but still want to be able to edit the properties in the actual drawing.

Family in question is attached.

Thanks,

In order to contrl nested families, the fnested family has to be set to shared and a parameter in the host family has to be set to control the nested family's parameter.  Read about this process in your HELP under: Creating Family Parameter Links

Also good if you download the Families Guide from the AutoDESK site.  It explains this process thoroughly.

Beware of shared families though, if you have say 10 types, and only 3 are being used in your project, so you purge the others... Well, when you open your family, it will only have 3 types!  The cool side is if you add/create types in a project, they will show up in your family.

I've set the nested family to shared and also have created the link from the family to the nested family.

In the project I can update the parameter in the properties but not through the symbol in the drawing.   I would like update the symbol in the drawing via the drawing.

Thoughts?

Toggle the parameter in the host family to an instance parameter... I think this should solve your issue.

I use this all the time, FYI, so it is possible, I create an annotation family, which has a "text" value to be displayed.  I load that into my host family, then go to type properties and assign a parameter from the host file to drive the value of the text value.

I tweaked with your original family posted, and didn't get it working, could get it like you had it where you could modify said component's value via the element's instance properties, but couldn't get it to so that you can click on it.  Now I'm going to have to redo my process to see why I could, but you couldn't, will post once done with that process.

Nope,  No go, I know it used to work, just like the title blocks, but this was for a receptacle family, my annotation symbol included a label, which you could modify, but I do know that you can use a tag family to get similar results...  Change your annotation family into a tag of the appropriate type, then load into your project, tag the component, (I recommend creating a component to tag at all possible rotations and then tagging them, and then in your annotation family, adjust about origin until it is positioned how you want it).

Here is what I tried, created the annotation symbol, without a shared parameter (not an option to have one), I gave it a text parameter which I placed a label to show its value (then just drew some designs for fun).  Loaded this symbol into a generic detail component, for No Go.  Changed in annotation family to instance parameter, still no go.  Changed the parameter in the detail component which pushes its value to the annotation family from type to instance, still no go.  Then did in a generic family, still no go, and finally in a face hosted, as per my receptacle families of old and surprisingly, still no go...  I wonder now if my memory is failing me, we used an annotation tag for any "wall" hosted families due to text not behaving as we wanted (if it is in family as a label or annotation symbol, it rotates with the component, even if "rotate with component" check box is NOT checked (and still does even if checked)).  So I might be remembering these tags and how they behaved, because you CAN click on a tag and modify its value(s) right there as you want.

Two options:  Use a line based detail component for the wall indicator, and a wall tag to pull out the wall material data.

2nd option is to try using a line based detail component for the wall and a detail component tag to pull out the wall material from the detail component.  I'd try the first option first, as I don't really see any benefit in the 2nd...

In summary, I couldn't replicate what you wanted done, without using a tag family.
