I have created an in place family in r2012.  I want to save it for use in other projects.  command used...

File / saveas / library / family / family to save...

the "family" as listed in the browser does not appear in the "family to save" list.   How do I save this family?

I don't think you can save an in-place family like that. What you can do is start a new family of the same category, edit the in-place, then copy and paste from one to the other.

Create a new empty family of the same category as your inplace, in the same session of Revit, open your project and then enter the inplace editor, copy the whole thing, then paste into the previously created blank family, make the few adjustments, changes that you will have to do, then you should be good to go.

OR

Copy the inplace family, and paste it into the new project (both projects need to be open in the same session of Revit).

i am pretty sure you can't copy / paste families between projects.   all that work is not re-usable???

This isn't copying from a project to a family, you are IN the in place editor, you are copying a family from a family, and I just verified it does work.  It won't get everything, i.e.- it might lose some parameters if you added any, but you can at least get all you linework, solids, voids, etc.

You're right, I am asking the question wrong.  You can always go into a project, edit the family and choose to save it to a file, assuming one can remember in which project that family is located.  I thought I read that with r2012, one could simply open families (that are part of a particular project) without having to open it.
