I want to insert the actual steel that the engineer specd
when i try and load a particular size of any of the structural componets I get a message telling me that it cannot load the family

The problem is that you've probably gone to "column" and then the "load family" button. What's happening is that you're asking revit to load a structural column family into a architectural column... identity. So it's saying no.
So, If you go to the insert tab, you can load families there, no strings attached. Or if that fails for some reason, you can just open/edit the structural family directly, and tell it to load into your project that's open in the background.
