Let's say I am trying to create a ceiling based generic component that is larger than the default 10' x 10' ceiling in the component family. How would I go about changing the size of that ceiling?

The 10 x 10 "host that you see doesn't really matter.  Just drag that out to a bigger size if you want.

I should clarify. I am doing a nested ceiling based component within a ceiling based component. So if I want to place the nested family inside the other one, I need a generic ceiling component larger than the 10'x10'

The answer is still the same for the question as asked.  But a nested component probably should not be hosted unless it is face based.

The host actually does matter. It is impossible to change the 10x10 dimension, and if you try to place a nested ceiling hosted family, it will fail to host. There is a workaround though, and it is bizarre. You can drag the 10x10 ceiling, and already hosted lights will disappear when the fall out of the footprint, though they will not delete. If you move the ceiling back, they reappear. So you end up having a 10x10 canvas on which to work.

Alternately, you could use the face based template, which does have grips you can adjust from the default 10x10 dimension. But if you're using nested ceiling hosted fixtures (say, vendor supplied families that were built that way), this is not an option.

I had not realized that there were no grips on the ceiling like there are on other hosts.

Question - Not sure what you are doing that needs a bigger host.... That seems strange.  Perhaps this nested item should be grouped with the other family instead of nested.

I have a typical conference room lighting layout that repeats from project to project. It's about 22' long by 10' wide, so won't fit on the 10'x10' footprint. If we nest the various fixtures inside a single lighting family, we can quickly dump in the whole thing as a unit.

We thought about grouping, which has certain benefits of being able to ungroup for irregular conditions, or deactivate visibility of random elements on a per instance basis. The downside is that a group has to be hosted by a project file. The idea is that we could have this family in the lighting folder so it doesn't bog down our default template.

For this particular case, there are a number of solutions/workarounds, and maybe families aren't the greatest concept, but it's nice to have figured out how to make a ceiling hosted element larger than 10x10 if I ever need to...

Groups can be exported to a file so that they can be used in other projects.  The ceiling does not have to be part of the group.  You can read about this in your HELP.
