sketchup models have a .skp suffix.   When you go to import cad, you can choose the file type you're trying to import, and .skp is at the bottom of the file type drop-down.

I don't have much experience working with sketchup models in revit, from my limited experience they're quite rigid.  To a small degree, you can explode sketchup models into smaller geometries, but that's about it.

You probably want to import your models into new families first, save those families, and load those into your project.

does the version of sketchup make an impact?

Because I tried to import that into a new family template, but it gives me the message of "can not import"

So are there some settings I need to look at before importing? Or is it just a hit and miss with the sketch up models on which will work and which wont?

Hmm.  I'm not sure.  I do know that importing into a "mass" family will have more success.  But there are a lot of links to similar questions down at the bottom of this page.  I know this question has been asked many times before.  browse around a bit.
