I need to use a parameter to report back the width of the wall, to calculate the depth of the window reveal (to either finish flush or form a rebated reveal) The reveal's depth parameter is part of the nested window frame family. The problem I am having is that in creating a dimension aligned to both faces of the wall and assigning a parameter to it, I am effectively constraining the wall thickness (which can't be constrained) and I end up getting an error when the wall thickness is changed. Any suggestions for getting the host objects thickness would be most appreciated - thanx.

This isn't possible for the exact reasons you've just mentioned. It would be nice in these hosted families if we could apply references to the host properties from within the family...

I think this will open a whole new can of worms... to be able to control host properties from the family. it will make things a bit more complicated than need to be. Smile it just gives to many options for people to get it wrong.

Thanx again for confirming. Work around means I manually need to input the wall thickness once inserted into model - definitely bearable. I've now completed the series of 35mm aluminium joinery families for the project. Single doorw/window are easy enough, but It has been a complete mission constraining the elements in a french door suite with 8 sidelights to adjust parametrically. Attached example without plan / seciton linework yet. There must be an easier way . . . surely. I had a quick try at linking mullions / transoms / sashes to reference lines, but it didn't seem to work. Potentially roughing out the geometry in reference lines and then binding nested family elements to them would develop 2 of the 3 necessary constraints immediately. How have others set up standard window components to achieve this ?

This sounds like a similar problem that we have just encountered.

We are trying to set up a door schedule, and one the itmes we usually list is the thickness of the wall, that a particular door is inserted into. This is quite critical as we need to report the thicknees of the wall, for the door frame build up.

It would be great if we could create a parameter that is applied to the door families, that will read and report the wall thickness.

Is this really a no go?

Thanks

MJ
