After creating systems for our prototype building we decided to turn the systems into groups to make it easier to relocate them when those areas changed position. Creating the groups was straight forward and simple, but when I went to save the groups some of them wouldn't save and gave the error code "Unable to save group type."

What does this mean? Any ideas what I could look at or fix? I can create an instance of the group, I can copy it, I can do all the usual things you can do to a group, except save it.

Are you working with multiple groups? Did you try to ungroup all other group (nested) and re-group them again?

No, just a single group. I was going to test it this way first, then combine a couple groups and test it again.

I did a bit of a work-around; I found the only thing preventing them from saving were the RTUs, which is strange because all of the RTU families were created off the same template and the other ones saved fine. I removed the offending RTUs, saved the group, opened the file and inserted the RTUs in the correct place. I'll be testing it soon.

Is there any 2D detail elements that are part of the group?

sometimes revit will keep it from being saved when there is a mix of 2D and 3D elements.

This is a guess, but I'm betting the reason those were your offenders, was somehow either their hosting, or that they were different between groups.  For example, if you have a face hosted object in a group, and the object to which it is hosted is slightly farther in one case than in another, then the groups start to get finicky.  Prior to saving the group, make sure that ALL of that group type are identical.  Once again, I'm guessing, but that would be where I start first...

@pchan: No 2d unless it's in a family for symbol lines. I used <tab> until all components in the system were selected.

@thetabest: I'm not quite following you. Some of the RTU families have several instances (have not confirmed workplane hosting yet). One of the RTUs that won't save is a single instance. I'll look further into the hosting issue in the morning, and re-read your post, maybe I'll understand it better in the morning after coffee.

My workaround failed. The group came in but it immediately wanted to disconnect the RTU and remove it from the group. At least I have all my ductwork and piping I can drop in a new RTU and connect it all up in a minute.

I apologize for lack of clarity, I'm sure its on my part.  Here is an example:  I made a group for a room, of the electrical fixtures, switches, light fixtures, etc.  BUT when I created new instances of this group, they were NOT part of a system (I was hoping to duplicate the switching circuits since they were identical for each and every room).  Thus I had to manually create each and every switch circuit.  I think that you are trying to include a system in your group, and apparently they can't be in there.

As to my previous explanation, I was suggesting where I'd start to trouble shoot this issue, as I think it would stem from either a hosting issue, OR having a difference between groups (caused by hosting, or by exclusion of an object from a group, etc.)  The reason I was guessing this is because I bet the program has a difficult time deciding which "version" is to be the true version...
