Go to Create New family --> choose profile-rail and drawing the shape of the RHS 250x150x5 --> save it and use it inside the system railing.

cundall,

Any profile family in revit cannot have more than one loop, in your case, you have 2 loops in profile, therefore, revit will reject it or say can't load family.

you can add material at where the setting of the railing is.

so really its not one of revits better tools then ? im not an expert at revit as you can tell but i would of thought it wouldnt of been that hard to put an rhs beam to the underside of a spiral staircase.

when i load the profile in to my model, it doesnt show up. i understand what your saying about the loops so i deleted one

thank you for your help tho

Do you intend to put the beam to the underside of the center of the stair? you can change the offset value from the railing and adjust it to the center of the stair.

For your information, stair is one of the items that people are complaining about, it doesn't always do what you want and there are limitations, but the workaround has been working for me all these times.

i want to put 2 RHS's to support each end of the stairs.

im just trying to show my clients what Revit can do and give them a more visual idea on what im trying to acheive.

i really wanted the RHS to show up as a proper steel section instead of a white box.

i would love to know if and how this can be done.

 cheers for your help pchan

I tweak the profile a bit so it shows a "tube" shape profile

You can see attached

in your case, depulicate the same profile from the railing setting and change the offset value to the opposit side of the stair, it should be close to what u want
