OK, I know this is an extremely simple problem, but I just can't figure it out after many years.

In RST 2011 (and all older versions too) .....

As I model in K series joists and wide flange steel beams, they come in perfect in the model and even on the sheet the joists are offset a bit from the end of the joist to the beam on which they bear.  BUT when I move a beam or change an elevation or just look at it wrong, the joists act like they have nothing to do with the beam anymore and they show up wrong.  If they are bearing correctly in 3D, they no longer have the nice gap on the sheet.  So I trim them back on the sheet and they are not bearing anymore.   SEE ATTACHED

I use RAC but I suppose they are the same for the beam family.

As far as I know, the line from the image is a model line from the family, in other words, you can edit the model line from the family editor and offset it to whatever distance they should be and then load it back to the model. That should fix your problem.
