I just want to honestly know the 2011 answer to this question. All the banter on the Net is years old. Here are the two viewpoints. WHAT SAY YINZ GUYS?

"Laser scans done of existing conditions (either site or buildings) will provide an accurate base for the design. Laser scans done during the construction phases will help the team update the model based on as-built information. This allows the team to look at how variation between design and build will affect upcoming work, and gives the team an opportunity to troubleshoot the issue prior to additional construction. This will also provide an accurate as-built for FM purposes."

.(Source:  http://bimx.blogspot.com/2007/12/do-you-want-to-import-laser-scan-data.html)

Then there's the opposing viewpoint:

"The last thing you would ever want is an extremely accurate Revit model. The promise of Revit is that it will allow for a true BIM work-flow. If you were to model the true slope of the floor and the wall .05 degrees off 90 you would create a useless, unworkable model. You would create a model that would cause enumerable problems when trying to run energy analysis, phasing plans would be a mess, paper sheets would look awful and rendered images would be terrible."

Thanks,

Gene

What is it you are attempting to do with your Revit model?

Point clouds are not a model, for major elements, you still have to place model components in lieu of one or more of the points in your cloud.

Lets say this is an interior room and you have a scan on both sides of a wall that seprates this room and another.  So as I have seen it demostrated, you can do a "best fit" to put a wall in your model to pick up a plane describes by the cloud in one room, then you can do the same for this same wall in the other room.  I am sure they will not match so what do you do?  You compromize nd place a wall that best fits both of these.  And hopefully, the final wall is truely vertical and parallel with other walls that should be parallel to it.  Otherwise Revit will not like it.

I was thinking of a more matured and futuristic "real-time BIM".

As I understand it, with my limited newbie knowledge, Revit can work with scheduling software (Primavera Suretrak) and takeoff software (ICE or Timberline). It would be incredible to have a real-time 3d feed of data into the model to compare where the project is on the time schedule. In addition, the data gathered for the time required to build sections could be collected for future time schedules.

This is the crazy stuff I think about when I fall asleep. This still seems a little futuristic; that's why I put the post in the wishlist.

Gene,

That starts to make some since for me. I don't think revit will be the tool, but I share your desire to be more involved in the construction process. Autodesk has a software, which can take photos, from your camera and create a 3D model. it seems extremely clever and may be in the future this type of thing can be moulded together.

sounds very interesting at all, but the questions is from where you collect your real time data?
