Hi,

I would appreciate some advice on fill patterns.

I work in the UK, and the detail component ‘Brick’ has a 45 degree single line fill pattern – which is not correct for the UK.

The UK uses 45 degree double line fill pattern for brickwork, in a new project (UK Metric) you’ll see this pattern listed as drafting pattern called “Brickwork”.

I want to change the family, but when I create a new family using ‘Metric Detail Component.rtf’ , the brickwork pattern is not loaded. (Though there is one called ‘Steel’ which is almost the same).

Whist I could rename ‘Steel’ to brickwork, I would really like to know how to create Brickwork properly.

It doesn’t look like it can be created as a Simple hatch pattern, when I click on ‘Custom’ and find “revit metric.pat” I cannot see Brickwork when I load the pat file.

I know Brickwork exists in the pat file as I can see it when I look at it in Notepad.

Any points on what I’m doing wrong?

Cheers.

Can you post the entry for brickwork in the .pat file? Maybe something is foobar in the definition.

Honestly, a double 45 deg pattern wouldn't be that difficult, just two lines. In fact, if the metric.pat file is similar to the imperial.pat file there are instructions at the header of the .pat file explaining how to create new patterns.

Give that a shot and let us know what you find.

Hi,

Thanks for your response.

My question is really: why is a drafting pattern (Brickwork for instance) available in the Revit project environment, but not in the family editor when creating a new Metric Detail Component?

Attached is a screen print of the Pattern Fill Dialog in the project environment, I've highlighted Brickwork - the one I want to use in the the Detrail Component editor. Its missing in the family editor.

I cannot even load it into the family editor, as 'revit metric.pat' does not have 'Brickwork' defined in it either.

I know I can make it myself, but really this is a common pattern which, and I cannot understand why some patterns are available in one environemnt and not another.

- Unless I'm missing something which might well be the case...

Cheers.

The patterns are not environment specific, they are contained within the project database. In the case of the building template, it makes sense to have it because, as you've stated, it's a common hatch pattern.

On the other hand there is no need to load it into a  family template becausemaybe .5% of the files you will create with that template will contain the brickwork pattern. Imagine having to load every single hatch pattern availabel to you everytime you opened Revit even if you wanted to make a small generic tag. That would be kinda silly Smile

So it has nothing to do with it being available in one environment and not the other. It's because the pattern is preloaded into the proejct template, but not the family template. Loading it into the family is the same process as loading it into a project and I think I see where the confusion is.

If you select the brickwork pattern and then click edit: Look for the pattern that is being used for that fill pattern. It should be listed under the Custom section. Find that same pattern int eh revit metric.pat file, not Brickworks.

Thats exactly the problem - in the project environment, if I open the fill patterns, and select Brickwork it shows that custom is selected, but lists no pat file, so I cannot load it in the Family editor.

See attached screen print.

I cannot believe I would have to recreate this very common hatch pattern, but I cannot find anywhere to load it from, its not present in 'revit.pat' or 'revit metric.pat'.

Try the Steel pattern in the .pat files. Brickwork is just the name that the persont hat placed the fill pattern intot he proejct called it.  Watch this video:

So basically it IS the steel pattern that is being used, it's just been titled Brickwork. Give that a shot in your family.

Thats a good idea - I did not realise that you could rename a pattern when you import it.

Thanks for your help on this.

(Though it still seems strange that the Brickwork hatch is missing in the pat files but available in the project environment...)
