I am working on a mass using reference lines and I am trying to unlock a face so as to manipulate the rest of the form and have that face stay in place. However, when I 'unlock', the entire reference unlocks from the form.

I am using 2011.......What am I doing wrong.

 Thanks

Why are you using reference lines when there are other ways to control the mass?  Do you really need these at all and do the locks need to be set?

Use locks sparingly, Revits associations work for most needs.  Why do something twice? - consider dimensions instead of reference lines - just place the sketch line.

I am probably not explaining my question accurately...

I am trying to do as was done on one of the 'Skill Builders' video on Autodesk Support where they used reference lines to creat a shape, then they extruded the shape. The 3D form is now controlled by the reference shape, so in order to manipulate the form, you have to change the reference shape. They then unlocked individual faces from the reference shape. This allowed for manipulation of the rest of the form while the unlocked faces remained in place.

The command for unlocking the individual faces from the reference shape is not clear in the video.

The video is promoting the use of reference lines instead of model lines in massing because every part of the form responds to the reference shape while with model lines you can only manipulate individual faces since the model lines are consumed by the form.

 Thanks

  1. Draw your reference lines,
  2. Add dimensions to control the reference lines,
  3. Create Form,
  4. Make a change to the dimensions parameters - all faces update,
  5. Select a face (use your tab key if necessary)
  6. A padlock shows up, click on it to unconstrain form profiles
  7. Make a change to the dimension parameters, the connection no longer exists between the reference lines and the form profiles...  So you can then freely edit all the other faces.

HTH.

NOTE: its also accessible from the ribbon -->Select object, -->Form Element-->Unlock Profiles/Lock Profiles
